Becoming an activist in her teens, Abeer has fought for women's rights in her home country of Yemen. 

She gained a degree and a Masters but then had was refused employment because she was a woman.

She forged her own path, working with the UN, the World Bank and other national and international organisations, to make the gains she envisioned for women. But in 2015, war struck her country and tore it apart.
